Commercial Dumpster Service Frequently Asked Questions
If you are a business owner and you need scheduled weekly waste removal service on a permanent ongoing basis, then you need commercial dumpster service. If you are seeking dumpster services on a temporary basis for a clean out, home remodel, construction project or any other temporary project, then a roll off dumpster is the best choice.
The size and function are the primary difference between the two types of dumpster. Commercial dumpsters are smaller, ranging from a 2 cubic yard to a 6 cubic yard dumpster. Commercial dumpsters can be used to dispose of regular waste (MSW), recyclables and organic wastes which include green (yard) waste and food waste. These are the dumpsters you typically see behind a business complex, gas station, restaurant, apartment complex, or other businesses that need permanent scheduled services. These services are generally scheduled anywhere from once every other week to seven days per week.
Roll off dumpsters are larger and generally hold anywhere between 10 cubic yards and 40 cubic yards of waste. They are generally used for temporary needs such as a home remodel project, garage clean out and construction related projects such as building and demolition of roads, homes and office spaces. Roll offs get their name because they “roll off” the back of a truck when delivered to customers.
To order a permanent commercial dumpster, simply enter your zip code to find prescreened vendors in your area. Select the appropriate commercial dumpster size and submit the requested information. A customer service representative from the company you have selected will contact you with a quote and complete your order.
Every company may have a slightly different policy on commercial dumpster delivery and removal. Generally, It is not necessary to have someone onsite for delivery of your commercial dumpster. However, please be as detailed as possible when answering the delivery questions, as the driver will use their judgment and place the dumpster in the safest accessible area.
If an onsite contact is not available for delivery, you will likely be responsible for all charges involved with moving the dumpster should it be necessary. For routine service, you will be responsible for providing unobstructed access to the dumpster on the scheduled pick-up day. If the dumpster is inaccessible, you may be subject to additional pick-up charges, as outlined in the terms and conditions of your commercial dumpster service contract.
With a commercial dumpster, similar rules to household waste generally apply. If you have specific questions or concerns about materials you will need to dispose of on a regular basis, you should speak with you local, prequalified provider. Your local provider will be knowledgeable about any local rules and regulations about materials disposal. They can also make recommendations that will best suit your needs.
In general, the following materials cannot be placed in a commercial dumpster: hazardous waste, dirt, industrial waste, chemical products, radioactive material, oil filters, herbicides & pesticides, solvents, paint (except completely dried latex paint cans, no liquids), other flammable liquids, aerosol cans, propane tanks, motor oil, transmission oil/lubricating/hydraulic oil/oil filters, contaminated oils (mixed with solvents, gasoline, etc.), antifreeze, petroleum contaminated soil/lead paint chips, tires, appliances, fluorescent tubes, batteries, computers, monitors, televisions, microwaves, railroad ties, medical waste, asbestos, animals, barrels and some liquids. Additional requirements may apply based upon locality. The liability for appropriate waste remains with the customer.
You will receive commercial dumpster dimensions from your local prescreened provider for each dumpster size. It is recommended that you provide space to accommodate double the amount of the width and height of the dumpster to assure adequate height and space clearance for maintenance and service. Also consider an additional 10’ for the door that swings open at the back of the dumpster.
Have you noticed your commercial dumpster is consistently overflowing by the time your service day rolls around? You may want to consider revising your service contract to increase the frequency of your pickup service. If you are anticipating a temporary or seasonal increase in waste, your local provider can discuss options for increasing service days per week on a temporary basis.
As always, it is best to discuss your specific needs and concerns with your local provider. They are experts in commercial dumpster service. They will be able to help assess your needs and provide a recommendation for pickup service scheduling.
Material must be level at the top of the container. Nothing can be sticking out of the top. This ensures safe disposal and limits the amount of litter than can escape and pile up on your property. This litter is unsightly, bad for the environment and can result in hefty fines. If you are consistently finding your trash overflows from your dumpster, contact your local provider to discuss your options. They may recommend increasing your dumpster size, adding an additional dumpster, increasing the frequency of your service days or switching to a compactor. Their recommendation may depend on your space availability and budget, local standards and product availability.
If you wish to recycle waste at your small business, industrial space or apartment complex, you will need additional waste collection units. The units required will vary by area as some areas require recycled materials to be presorted while others have facilities that can accommodate commingled recyclables.
If your location is consistently disposing of large quantities of boxes, you may also consider a large cardboard recycling unit. These are popular at retail locations, warehouses and apartment complexes where moving boxes can quickly pile up.
If you live in an area where wildlife is known to forage in dumpsters, ask your local provider about options for locking or otherwise securing your dumpster in the evenings. Nobody wants to walk out to the dumpster to meet a bear. Taking appropriate, preventative measures to secure your dumpster will keep you, your employees, customers and the surrounding wildlife safe.
Your local provider will be able to work with you to find the best spot for your commercial dumpster. If you are concerned about the appearance and cannot fit a dumpster behind a building, your provider may be able to supply an enclosure or barrier so your dumpster is not visible to customers, guests or other visitors to your establishment.
